Exfoliating is the process of eliminating dead skin cells from the surface of your skin. The skin naturally sheds this top layer about every 30 days. However, as you age, the pace at which your body sheds old and dead skin cells begins to slow down. Exfoliation simply accelerates what the skin does on its own.
There are two main ways to exfoliate, the first being physical exfoliant. This method requires manual scrubbing or rubbing using exfoliating mitts, loofah sponges, cleansing scrubs, dry brushes, or pumice stones. This method is easy to do at home and offers immediate results. But if performed incorrectly, physical exfoliation can sometimes irritate your skin and cause PIH (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation). Be sure to keep your motions gentle and follow with your moisturize.
The second way to exfoliate is chemical exfoliators with hydroxy acids (such as glycolic acid, retinol, and lactic acid), which is a combination of safe-for-skin acids that chemically dissolve debris. Chemical exfoliation can offer more dramatic results.
